The benefits of Interim Management

Interim Management is an extremely effective management tool for companies looking to introduce change, and to bring new skills into the organisation. The use of Interim Management is well recognised in the United States and Europe, and is now becoming increasingly popular in areas of the Asia Pacific region.

In many cases, an Interim Manager will prove to be a more efficient and cost effective alternative to using a Consultant. Generally, a Consultant is employed to advise an organisation, whereas an Interim Manager will have be specific targets to achieve and will be accountable for the realisation of those targets. Furthermore, Interim Managers are highly focused on meeting their assignment brief, without the distraction of managing their career within the political realities of the organisation. Examples of assignments where Interim Management could be effectively used include:

Bring specific expertise into the organisation for a particular assignment or project where the necessary skills are not currently available, or will not be required on an ongoing basis;
Following the loss of a senior executive, take the opportunity to restructure and refocus the organisational unit before appointing a permanent replacement; and
Provide temporary cover for senior personnel while they are on extended leave or seconded to a special project for a period of weeks or months.

A successful Interim Manager is someone who is:

Impartial, objective and with no particular bias;
Able to quickly come to terms with situation and can be effective from day 1;
Successful with a proven track record of delivery in their area of expertise;
Practical and "hands-on";
Professional, confident and is able to operate individually or as a member of a team; and
An excellent communicator, at all levels from the board and executive management, through to the team members impacted by change.
